Did you know...?
Tulum was a walled city of Mayan culture,The city received in ancient times the Mayan name of Zamá (which means dawn in Mayan) and the current one, Tulum (which means Mayan wall), which seems to have been used to refer to the city when it was already in ruins. Due to the numerous records in murals and other works found in the buildings of the city, it is considered that Tulum was an important center of worship for the so-called "descending god".
During its heyday in the postclassic period (XIII and XIV centuries), Tulum represented an important commercial city and obligatory stop for many maritime routes that covered Mexico and South America. However, with the arrival of the Spanish in the Yucatan peninsula and the disappearance of the local population, the city was forgotten until 1841, when it was rediscovered by explorers John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood. Currently, Tulum is the only Mayan city preserved by the sea.
It has more than 60 restored temples, El Castillo is the main building in the archaeological zone of Tulum, being the most photographed site in the Riviera Maya for its peculiar location on the cliff. The Mayan city is surrounded by walls, each one symbolizing one of the elements: earth, water, air and fire. The reef off the coast forms the fourth wall and was practically inaccessible.

Yal Kú is a cove flanked by abundant jungle, a heavenly place where you can do the best snorkeling tour in Riviera Maya. Known by many as "Laguna Yal Kú", this beautiful natural spot is located in Akumal, a few kilometers from Tulum. Yal Kú has the peculiarity of being a crystalline meeting point between the Caribbean Sea and the fresh water coming from the underground rivers of the region, which endows it with unique characteristics for the life of many aquatic species. Get ready to live a snorkeling adventure in Riviera Maya that you will never forget!
If you are a fan of water activities such as snorkeling, this place will make you fall in love, as it is famous for its crystal clear waters and a wide variety of multicolored fish that you can appreciate with the right equipment.
Enjoy Xelha Natural Water Park!
It is an ecological park, characterized by a cove in which the groundwater of the Yucatan peninsula is integrated into the Caribbean Sea, forming a space for the coexistence of various marine and freshwater species. It is for this reason that Xel-Há is known for being a natural aquarium.
For the Mayans, the location of Xel-Há contributed to the development of port activities. The area seems to have had two periods of pre-Hispanic occupation: in the late Pre-Classic and the Early Classic. In this last stage, Xel-Há was the coastal settlement with the largest population in the area.
Today the main attraction of the Xel-Há park is precisely its large cove, which is characterized by being simultaneously an entrance of sea water to the continent and the outlet of several fresh water channels. For this reason, it is home to 70 species of aquatic fauna, such as blonde, parrotfish, surgeon, horse mackerel, sergeant major, chacchi, snapper, macabi, rays, chub, and some other barracuda.
¡Discover the great cenotes!
What are Cenotes?
Cenotes are deep water wells, which are fed by the filtration of the rain and by the currents of the rivers that are born in the heart of the earth. That is why when you swim in a cenote you feel so fresh, imagine that the average temperature of its waters is maximum 24 ° C!(75 ºF)
These wells owe their name to the Mayans, who baptized them with the word Dz’onot, which means “cave with water” and from there it derived its current name: cenotes.
Types of Cenotes:
Cave cenotes, they are the youngest cenotes and the most enigmatic, since their water mirror is still inside a cavern, that is why the Mayans chose them as the setting for some of their ceremonies.
Semi-open Cenotes, this type of cenotes are middle-aged, because although they are not yet so old that they are fully exposed, a part of them has already been left out in the open.
Open Cenotes, they are the oldest cenotes, since over time (that is, millions of years), the roof that covered them gives way and collapses, leaving them exposed to the elements.
